NEMS Counseling Department

The NEMS counseling department consists of three school counselors and one school social worker.  Our team is here to help make the best middle school experience for each student.  School counselors are assigned to a graduation year cohort of students and loop with this group students throughout middle school. We believe looping promotes the best atmosphere of support and advocacy.

Proactive Services and Classroom Lessons:

Throughout middle school, we will work with your student's teachers to lead bi-monthly classroom lessons related to Employability Skills, Academic Skills (including study skills and organization) and Career Planning (including preparing for College and Careers).

Additionally, we can meet with students individually and in group sessions. Group guidance sessions will be held during East time, lunch, or elective periods. Counselors have caseloads according to teams as well as grade levels.

Gone are the days of school counselors taking a reactionary approach to student learning and college and career readiness. Our department follows the American School Counselor Association National Model: A Framework for School Counseling.  School counselors stay at the pulse of current preteen and teen issues through various professional development opportunities as well as staying involved with school activities and events.

College and Career Readiness: Counselors at NEMS partners with the Department of Education, Learn More Indiana and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education to disseminate key information related to College Planning and Career Exploration throughout the year. Students participate in College and Career Go Week activities in the Fall and other career activities in the Spring.

We encourage you to explore the Community Resources section as well as What to Expect guides for 6th, 7th and 8th Grades
